Case Study - Disk Brake Cover

Project  considerations - To develop a wheel protector to prevent corrosion on both 18’’ and 19’’ wheels for the Holden HSV Monaror export program.

Function

  • To fit onto the rim of  the export Monaro and remain intact for the duration of  storage and  transport overseas.
  • To protect the inner brake disc assembly from dust,grit, moisture.
    To provide a VCI treatment to prevent corrosion of the brake disc assembly during storage, and overseas transportation.
  • Can be taken off without the necessity of removing wheel via specially designed butterfly skip cuts.
  • To be able to withstand proving ground conditions to 100 kms per hour 

What are VCI's ? - The Rigid plastic is chemically treated with a VCI  that will give off a vapour to form a molecular film to passivate  the corrosive action of moisture and oxygen by passivating  any moisture present and rendering it non corrosive.

Vapour is released at a controlled rate thereby making tight sealing unnecessary moreover since the rate of release is temperature sensitive increases in temperature will increase the rate of volatilation, thus providing commensurately increased protection a desireable feature since corrosion activity increases with temperature.

Protection is provided in contact with the metal surface as well as in the vapour phase.
